Our favourite amino-amide LA has been around since 1949 and its clinical use is ubiquitous.
As are its side effects.
Increasingly though its use and efficacy as an atypical analgesic (together with Ketamine/the Gabapentanoids etc) is being looked at in the broader perioperative setting.
Particularly now that the era of ERAS protocols for many different types of surgery has arrived and also the consideration that opioids themselves can cause hyperalgesia - (opioid - induced hyperalgesia).

In July 2015 a Cochrane review :

"IV Lidocaine for the reduction of pain and improvement in recovery for a variety of surgical procedures"

found

"limited evidence suggesting IV Lidocaine may be a useful adjuvant during GA because of its beneficial impact on several outcomes after surgery"

Interestingly they also commented on a "scarcity" of evidence to assess the efficacy when compared to a (presumably thoracic) epidural.
Still the "gold standard" for pain control in this age of increasing laparoscopic procedures?
